Sun
The Sun is the star at the center of our Solar System, a massive ball of plasma held together by gravity and powered by nuclear fusion in its core. It is by far the largest object in the solar system, containing 99.86% of all its mass, and has dominated the evolution of every planet, moon, and living thing on Earth.
Basic Properties
The Sun is approximately 4.6 billion years old and sits roughly halfway through its expected lifespan. Its surface temperature reaches about 5,500 Kelvin, while its core burns at around 15 million Kelvin, fusing hydrogen into helium at a rate of 600 million tons per second. This fusion process releases the energy that bathes Earth in warmth and light, making all known life possible.
Effects on Earth
Without the Sun's energy, Earth would be a frozen, lifeless rock. Its radiation drives our weather systems, powers photosynthesis, and provides the energy that ultimately sustains every organism—from Honey Bees and other pollinators to humans. The Sun's cycles, including its roughly 11-year sunspot cycle, influence everything from climate patterns to radio communications.

The Sun's Future
In about 5 billion years, the Sun will exhaust its hydrogen fuel and expand into a Red Giant, likely engulfing Mercury, Venus, and possibly Earth before shedding its outer layers and collapsing into a White Dwarf.
