Pollinators are animals that transfer pollen between flowering plants, enabling reproduction and the production of seeds and fruits. As they feed on nectar or pollen, they inadvertently become dusted with pollen grains and carry them from flower to flower—a partnership so ancient and intimate that roughly 75% of global food crops depend on it, at least in part.
The cast of characters
The most famous pollinator is the honey bee, but the pollination world is wonderfully diverse. Insects dominate: butterflies, moths, beetles, and hoverflies all play crucial roles. Less visible but equally vital are wind pollinators like grasses and many trees. Vertebrates join the dance too—hummingbirds, bats, and even some small mammals pollinate plants in their regions, often with flowers that have evolved specifically to attract them.
Why it matters
Without pollinators, we'd lose almonds, apples, cucumbers, and countless wild plants that stabilize ecosystems. Coffee and cacao depend entirely on them. The relationship is reciprocal: plants evolved bright colors, sweet nectar, and appealing scents specifically to reward pollinators with food, creating one of nature's most elegant feedback loops.
The crisis
Pollinator populations worldwide are declining due to habitat loss, pesticides, climate change, and disease. This has sparked conservation efforts, urban beekeeping, and research into whether Artificial Intelligence can help monitor and protect these essential creatures. Some regions, like parts of Lisbon, now designate pollinator-friendly green spaces.
