Electromagnetic spectrum
The electromagnetic spectrum is the complete range of all electromagnetic radiation organized by frequency and wavelength. Every wave of light, radio signal, and X-ray belongs to this unified continuum, from the longest radio waves (spanning kilometers) to the shortest gamma rays (smaller than atoms).
What makes the spectrum remarkable is that it's all fundamentally the same phenomenon—oscillating electric and magnetic fields—just vibrating at different rates. A microwave oven and the visible light in your eye operate on identical principles, separated only by frequency.
The spectrum divides into regions: Radio waves, Microwaves, Infrared radiation, visible light (what our eyes detect), Ultraviolet radiation, X-rays, and Gamma rays. Each region enables different technologies and reveals different secrets of nature. Spectroscopy uses these regions to identify what distant stars are made of; Cryptography exploits their properties to secure information; Microbiology harnesses UV light to sterilize.
Understanding the electromagnetic spectrum unified electricity, magnetism, and optics—one of science's greatest achievements. It shows that Matter and Radiation are expressions of the same deep principles governing reality.
