Cryptography
Cryptography is the science and art of transforming information into unreadable form to protect secrets, and then revealing them only to authorized readers. From ancient cipher wheels to modern digital locks, cryptography enables trust in a world of eavesdroppers.
The discipline rests on mathematical principles—especially algebraic structures—to create codes so tangled that decryption without a key demands impossible computational effort. Today's strongest systems use prime numbers of staggering size, exploiting the gap between easy multiplication and brutally hard factorization.
Cryptography guards far more than whispered secrets. It secures Internet transactions, authenticates digital signatures, and underpins blockchain systems. During the Middle Ages and through World War II, codebreakers wielded cryptanalysis as a weapon—famously at Bletchley Park. The field has evolved into a cornerstone of digital security and information privacy.
Modern cryptography splits into two camps: symmetric (shared secret keys) and asymmetric (public-private key pairs). Both depend on mathematical phenomena that remain one-way unless you possess the key.
