X-rays
X-rays are a form of Electromagnetic radiation with extremely short wavelengths and high Energy — lying between Ultraviolet radiation and Gamma rays on the spectrum. First discovered by Wilhelm Röntgen in 1895, they pass through soft tissues but are absorbed by dense materials like bone and metal, making them invaluable for Medical imaging.
X-rays are produced when fast-moving Electrons strike a metal target, causing sudden deceleration and energy release. This process, called Bremsstrahlung, generates the penetrating radiation that revolutionized Medicine and Physics.
In medicine, X-ray imaging reveals fractures, tumors, and internal injuries with minimal radiation dose — though repeated exposure carries risks. Beyond healthcare, X-rays serve astronomers studying cosmic phenomena, materials scientists examining Crystal structures, and Quality control inspectors examining manufactured goods.
The same physical properties that make X-rays useful also demand careful handling. Modern protocols balance diagnostic benefit against potential DNA damage, and Shielding protects both patients and technicians.
