Solar radiation
Solar radiation is the electromagnetic energy emitted by the Sun, traveling across space and reaching Earth and other celestial bodies. It arrives as electromagnetic waves spanning from ultraviolet to infrared wavelengths, powering nearly all life and climate systems on our planet.
The Sun radiates energy continuously through nuclear fusion. Solar radiation travels 150 million kilometers to Earth in roughly eight minutes, where our atmosphere absorbs, reflects, and transmits portions of it. About 30% reflects back to space; the rest warms the surface and drives weather, ocean currents, and photosynthesis.
This energy is central to understanding Earth's energy balance and climate systems. Variations in solar output—influenced by sunspot cycles and orbital mechanics—affect long-term climate patterns. Meanwhile, human society harvests solar radiation through solar panels and thermal collectors, converting it into electricity and heat.
Solar radiation also creates phenomena like the aurora borealis, drives wind patterns, and sustains ecosystems from photosynthetic organisms to entire food webs. Understanding its intensity, spectrum, and variability remains essential for climate science, agriculture, and sustainable energy development.
