Biodiversity
Biodiversity refers to the variety of life on Earth—the totality of species, genes, and ecosystems and their interactions. It encompasses everything from microscopic bacteria to vast plant communities, from the depths of the ocean to mountain peaks. Earth's biodiversity is staggering: millions of species have evolved over billions of years, each playing a role in the carbon cycle, pollination, soil formation, and countless other ecological processes.
Biodiversity exists at multiple scales. Genetic diversity within populations ensures species can adapt to change. Species diversity measures the number and abundance of different organisms in a region. Ecosystem diversity reflects the variety of habitats and their unique communities.
Yet biodiversity faces unprecedented threats. Habitat loss, Climate change, pollution, and overexploitation are driving species toward extinction at rates unmatched since the dinosaurs vanished. Protecting biodiversity matters profoundly: it sustains human food systems, medicines, clean water, and climate regulation. Conservation efforts—from protecting rainforests to restoring wetlands—are critical for both ecological resilience and human flourishing.
