Moon

The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite, a rocky world roughly one-quarter Earth's diameter that orbits our planet every 27.3 days. Formed about 4.5 billion years ago—likely from debris after a Mars-sized body collided with the young Earth—it has shaped life itself. The Moon's gravity drives tides that churn oceans and create Tide Pools, rhythms that early life synchronized with. Its phases guided human calendars for millennia.

The lunar surface tells stories written in craters, mountains, and dark plains called maria. Twelve humans have walked there; robotic explorers continue mapping its geology. The Moon stabilizes Earth's axial tilt, moderating climate swings that might otherwise prevent complex life. It slowly recedes from us—about 3.8 centimeters per year.

More than a satellite, the Moon is a mirror reflecting our scientific ambitions. It's the only world humans have visited beyond Earth, and it remains central to future space exploration: lunar bases could serve as stepping stones to Mars and beyond.
