Moon Phases
The Moon Phases are the cyclical changes in the Moon's apparent illumination as seen from Earth, caused by the changing angle between the Sun, Moon, and observer. Over roughly 29.5 days—a cycle called the Lunar Month—the Moon progresses through eight distinct phases, from New Moon (invisible, between Earth and Sun) through Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon (fully illuminated), Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter, and Waning Crescent, before returning to New.
This cycle is purely a matter of orbital geometry: the Moon doesn't generate its own light, only reflects the Sun's. The phases reveal no change in the Moon itself, only our perspective on its illuminated hemisphere.
Moon phases have shaped human culture for millennia—ancient calendars relied on them, and many cultures mark time by lunar months. They influence tidal patterns on Earth through Gravity, affecting everything from Tide Pools to maritime navigation. Modern astronomy uses phase predictions for eclipse forecasting and Spacecraft mission planning.
