Food Web
A food web is the interconnected system of living organisms in an ecosystem, linked by who eats whom. Unlike a simpler food chain (which traces a single path), a food web captures the complex, overlapping feeding relationships that sustain life. Energy flows from plants and other producers through herbivores, carnivores, and decomposers in multiple, crisscrossing pathways.
Food webs reveal ecosystem stability: when one species declines, others may compensate by shifting diet or role. A species' position—whether apex predator, mid-level consumer, or primary producer—determines its ecological influence.
Scientists map food webs by studying genetic markers, gut contents, and behavioral observations.
