Food Chain

A food chain is a linear sequence showing how energy and nutrients flow through an Ecosystem from one organism to another. Each step represents a feeding relationship: plants capture Solar Energy, herbivores eat plants, carnivores eat herbivores, and decomposers break down dead matter. This transfer is never perfectly efficient—most energy is lost as heat, so each level supports fewer organisms than the one below it, creating a characteristic pyramid Diagram.

Food chains reveal the Interdependence of living things. They're fundamental to understanding Ecology, Conservation, and how disruptions (like removing a Predator) can cascade through entire communities. A single ecosystem typically contains dozens of interconnected food chains, which together form a more complex Food Web.

The concept applies across every biome: from ocean Plankton chains to forest Carnivores to Nocturnal Animals in caves. Even human societies participate in food chains when we farm, hunt, or consume resources. Food chains make visible the hidden architecture of nature—showing that survival is woven into relationship, and that nothing exists alone.
