Earth's history
Earth's history spans approximately 4.54 billion years, beginning with the planet's formation from stellar dust and ending in the present day. This vast timeline reveals a world transformed by Plate tectonics, Climate shifts, and the emergence of life.
The earliest eons saw a molten Earth gradually cooling, developing its iron core and rocky crust. Atmospheric conditions shifted dramatically as Photosynthesis emerged in primitive organisms, filling the air with oxygen around 2.4 billion years ago—the Great Oxidation Event.
Life diversified explosively during the Cambrian period roughly 541 million years ago. Fish, Plants, insects, and eventually dinosaurs dominated terrestrial and aquatic habitats. The fossil record—preserved in rock layers—documents Natural selection carving complexity from simpler ancestors.
Five mass extinction events punctuate this history. The most famous ended the dinosaurs 66 million years ago, clearing the way for mammals to flourish. Humans arrived remarkably recently: anatomically modern humans emerged only ~300,000 years ago, yet radically reshaped Earth through agriculture, industry, and technology.
Today we inhabit the Anthropocene—an epoch defined by human influence on Geology, Climate, and Biodiversity. Understanding Earth's history helps us grasp our planet's fragility and resilience alike.
