Alan Turing
Alan Turing (1912–1954) was a British mathematician and logician whose theoretical work revolutionized philosophy, computing, and statistics.
Turing's most famous contribution is the Turing machine, an abstract mathematical model that formalized what computation means—establishing the foundations of computer science decades before modern computers existed. During World War II, he led the effort to break Nazi cryptography at Bletchley Park, building the Bombe machine, which is credited with shortening the war.
After the war, Turing pioneered artificial intelligence and proposed the Turing test—a practical criterion for machine intelligence based on indistinguishability from human conversation. He also made groundbreaking contributions to sequence modeling and mathematical biology, particularly the study of morphogenesis (how patterns emerge in living systems).
Turing's life was tragically shortened by his prosecution under British anti-homosexuality laws. He died in 1954, likely by suicide, though the exact circumstances remain debated.
His intellectual legacy is immense: nearly every aspect of modern computer science, from algorithms to artificial intelligence, traces back to his foundational work.
