Speciation

Speciation is the evolutionary process by which new species arise from existing ones. It occurs when populations become reproductively isolated—unable to interbreed—and accumulate enough genetic differences to become distinct species. This is how Earth's astonishing biodiversity emerged from common ancestors.

The process typically unfolds over thousands or millions of years. Populations may diverge through Geographic isolation (when physical barriers separate them), Ecological speciation (when they exploit different resources), or Sexual selection (through divergent mating preferences). Natural selection amplifies these differences as each population adapts to its unique environment.

Polyploidy offers a dramatic shortcut, especially in plants: a sudden multiplication of chromosomes can instantly create reproductive isolation. The Fossil record preserves glimpses of speciation's slow march, though the actual moment of splitting is rarely captured.
