Predation
Predation is an ecological interaction in which one organism (the predator) hunts, captures, and consumes another (the prey) for sustenance. It's a fundamental driver of natural selection, shaping both predator and prey through an endless arms race of adaptation: prey develop speed, camouflage, or toxins; predators evolve keener senses, stronger jaws, or strategic intelligence.
Predation occurs across all biomes and scales—from neurons consuming pathogens to apex predators like sharks or eagles. The interaction profoundly affects population dynamics, food webs, and biodiversity. A keystone predator can regulate entire ecosystems by controlling herbivore populations, preventing overgrazing.
Predator-prey relationships produce striking adaptations: the hunting strategies of snakes, the stealth of marine predators, the invisibility of stick insects. Some prey species evolve warning coloration; others employ mimicry or chemical defenses like the toxins in certain chemical compounds.
