Plant taxonomy
Plant taxonomy is the science of classifying and naming plants based on their evolutionary relationships and shared characteristics. It organizes Earth's incredible botanical diversity—from microscopic Mosses to towering trees—into a nested hierarchy of groups, helping us understand how plants are related and how they evolved.
The modern system traces back to Naming conventions established by botanists like Carl Linnaeus, who created the binomial naming system (genus and species). Today, plant taxonomy integrates evidence from Genetics, chemical structure, anatomy, and fossil records to build increasingly accurate "family trees."
Taxonomists examine features like leaf shape, flower structure, Chloroplast DNA, and photosynthetic pathways (such as C3 photosynthesis) to sort plants into kingdoms, phyla, classes, orders, families, genera, and species. This classification has profound practical value: it helps us identify pollinators, predict ecological impacts, guide agricultural breeding, and discover medicinal compounds like Catechins.
