Marine Biology
Marine biology is the scientific study of life in oceans and other salt-water environments—from microscopic bacteria to whales. It bridges multiple fields: understanding marine ecosystems, the evolution and behavior of sea creatures, and how these environments are shaped by tides, currents, and chemical composition.
The discipline emerged as oceanographic exploration accelerated in the 19th century, though humans have observed marine life for millennia. Modern marine biology uses tools like genetic sequencing, submersibles, and networked monitoring systems to map the ocean's biodiversity—still largely unknown. The ocean covers 71% of Earth yet remains less explored than the moon, making marine biology both urgent and perpetually revelatory.
