Economy
An economy is the system by which a society organizes the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services. It encompasses everything from individual resource competition to global trade networks, and reflects how communities answer fundamental questions: what to make, how to make it, and who gets what.
Economies emerge wherever scarcity meets human ingenuity. They can be adaptively managed through policy, or evolve organically through billions of individual decisions. Irrational behavior routinely contradicts economic theory—people pursue fairness, status, and meaning alongside material gain.
Modern economies blend mechanisms: Markets allocate goods through price signals; Governments regulate and redistribute; Institutions enforce contracts and norms. Technology reshapes everything constantly, from digital environments enabling remote work to GPS revolutionizing logistics.
Yet economies operate within physical limits. Carrying capacity, pollution, and forest depletion remind us that even abstract systems depend on finite science and ecology. The deepest economic question may be: how do we ensure abundance without exhausting the systems that sustain us?
