Global Positioning System

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation network that pinpoints locations on Earth with remarkable precision. Launched by the United States Department of Defense in the 1970s and fully operational since 1995, it works by triangulating signals from orbiting satellites to calculate latitude, longitude, and altitude.

A receiver picks up signals from at least four satellites simultaneously, measuring the time each signal takes to arrive.
