Coherence

Coherence describes the quality of forming a unified, logically consistent whole—whether in thought, communication, physical systems, or reality itself. A coherent argument hangs together; coherent light waves vibrate in sync; a coherent ecosystem maintains balance across its parts. The term bridges seemingly distant domains because it names a deep principle: when elements relate meaningfully and reinforce each other rather than clash, something greater emerges.

In philosophy and logic, coherence is a test of truth—do your beliefs support one another, or do they contradict? In physics, coherence describes waves or particles maintaining a stable phase relationship, essential to fiber optics and quantum mechanics. In urban design and environmental design, coherence means elements work together toward shared purpose rather than fragmenting function.

Doubt often signals lost coherence; expertise typically reflects deep coherence within a domain. Even mysticism pursues coherence—a unified vision where the apparent multiplicity of experience reveals itself as interconnected.

The opposite of coherence isn't complexity; it's fragmentation. A system can be intricately complex yet deeply coherent, or deceptively simple yet scattered in purpose.
