Redundancy
Redundancy is the provision of extra capacity, components, or systems beyond the minimum required for normal operation. When one element fails, others can compensate, maintaining function and preventing catastrophic failure.
Redundancy appears across nature and design. A backup heart valve, a second kidney, or duplicate fiber optic cables all exemplify the principle: duplication as insurance. In ecological systems, stability often depends on redundant species filling similar roles—if one declines, others sustain the food web.
The concept balances efficiency against resilience. Pure efficiency minimizes waste; pure redundancy wastes resources. Most robust systems occupy the middle ground, especially critical ones like Computer networks, aircraft systems, and power grids. Antifragile systems often rely on controlled redundancy to benefit from disorder.
Redundancy also describes repetition in language or data—saying the same thing twice, or storing identical information in multiple places. In signal processing and Fourier analysis, redundancy can encode error-correction or resilience into transmitted information.
The term comes from Latin redundare, to overflow—the idea of having more than strictly necessary.
