Binary star systems
A binary star system is a pair of Stars orbiting their common center of mass under gravitational attraction. Far from solitary—binary systems are extraordinarily common, perhaps comprising half of all Stars. These cosmic dances reveal fundamental truths about stellar formation, Evolution, and death.
The two stars in a binary can vary dramatically in size, temperature, and mass. Some orbit so closely they distort each other's shapes; others wheel through space millions of kilometers apart. Their interaction reshapes both stars' destinies. A massive companion can strip material from its partner in a process called mass transfer, sometimes creating spectacular X-ray emissions or supernova explosions.
Binary systems offer astronomers unparalleled laboratories for measuring stellar properties.
