A solar panel is a device that converts sunlight directly into Electricity through the Photovoltaic effect. Composed of silicon-based semiconductor cells arranged in a grid, solar panels generate Voltage when Photons strike their surface, exciting electrons and creating electric current.
Modern panels typically achieve 15-22% efficiency, with the remaining Energy lost as Heat. Multiple panels connect to an Inverter, which converts direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC) suitable for homes and grids. Temperature affects performance—panels work best in cool conditions, making climate a key installation factor.
Solar panels have become central to renewable power generation, powering everything from Space-based satellites to rooftop installations. They require minimal maintenance, last 25-30 years, and produce zero emissions during operation. Manufacturing does carry environmental costs, though most panels generate more energy over their lifetime than was spent creating them.
The technology accelerated during the modern era, with dramatic cost reductions since 2010 making solar competitive with fossil fuels in many regions. Emerging innovations include flexible panels, building-integrated designs, and optimized multi-junction cells exceeding 40% efficiency in laboratory settings.
