World Wide Web
The World Wide Web is an information system built atop the Internet, allowing documents and resources to be accessed through hyperlinked pages. Invented by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989 at CERN, it transformed how humanity organizes and shares knowledge by introducing a simple yet powerful model: the HyperText Transfer Protocol, markup language, and Uniform Resource Locators.
Unlike the Internet itself—the underlying computational network—the Web is a layer of meaning and connection. Pages reference one another through Hyperlinks, creating an intricate web of relationships. Browsers render these pages, turning raw data into human-readable experiences. Over three decades, it evolved from static documents to dynamic Web applications, hosting everything from Wikipedia to streaming services.
The Web democratized publishing: anyone could create and share. Yet it also concentrated power among search engines and platform companies. Today, questions about Digital privacy, Decentralization, and Net neutrality shape discussions of its future. Some envision a decentralized successor; others defend its original openness.
The Web remains humanity's closest approach to a collective memory—flawed, beautiful, and still being written.
