Supernovae
A supernova is the catastrophic explosion of a star, one of the most violent and luminous events in the universe. For a brief period, a single supernova can outshine an entire galaxy of billions of stars, briefly becoming visible across cosmic distances.
Supernovae occur through two main mechanisms. In one scenario, a white dwarf (the dense remnant of a dead star) orbits a companion star, slowly siphoning material onto its surface until nuclear fusion ignites uncontrollably. In another, a massive star exhausts its nuclear fuel, and its core collapses catastrophically before rebounding in a violent explosion.
These explosions scatter heavy elements—iron, nickel, cobalt—across space, seeding nebulae that eventually condense into new stars and planets. The iron in your blood, the calcium in your bones: supernovae created them.
Astronomers use supernovae as cosmic distance markers, since explosions of the same type produce predictable brightness. This technique helped reveal that the universe's expansion is accelerating—a discovery awarded the 2011 Nobel Prize. Observatories worldwide monitor the sky constantly, hunting for these rare, fleeting beacons.
