A search engine is a Software system that crawls, indexes, and retrieves information from vast digital spaces—most famously the web, but also institutional databases, academic repositories, and private networks. Users submit queries using pattern-matching techniques, and the engine ranks results by relevance through complex algorithms that evaluate factors like content quality, authority, and user behavior.
Modern search engines evolved from early AI-assisted indexing systems in the 1990s. They rely on automated crawlers to discover and catalog pages, variables to weight ranking signals, and computational methods to process billions of queries daily. Beyond text, they now search images, videos, code repositories, and specialized databases.
Search engines have become essential infrastructure: they democratize access to knowledge, shape professional research, influence public discourse, and create enormous economic value through advertising. Yet they also concentrate power—a handful of corporations control most web search globally—raising questions about bias, privacy, and the curation of human knowledge.
Competing philosophies exist: some engines prioritize comprehensive indexing, others emphasize privacy, and researchers explore decentralized alternatives.
