Permafrost

Permafrost is ground—soil, rock, or sediment—that remains frozen for at least two consecutive years, typically found in Arctic regions, high mountains, and deep ocean floors. This seemingly dormant landscape is surprisingly dynamic: it stores vast quantities of organic matter in a state of suspended animation, locked away from the Carbon cycle.

The frozen earth is now at the center of urgent geopolitical and thermodynamic concerns. As global temperatures rise, permafrost thaws, releasing methane and carbon dioxide that accelerate Climate change. This thaw also destabilizes infrastructure, collapses coastlines, and fundamentally alters ecosystems adapted to eternal cold.

Permafrost regions harbor ancient DNA, preserved microorganisms, and clues to Earth's climate history. Indigenous peoples have thrived atop permafrost for millennia, developing sophisticated knowledge systems for survival in these extreme environments. Yet permafrost remains one of Earth's least understood frontiers—a place where physical processes, energy systems, and human futures intersect.

The term also carries metaphorical weight: anything described as "permafrost" resists change, stubbornly locked in place by time and circumstance.
