Peppered moths

Peppered moths are a famous case study in Evolution and Anthropogenic change. Native to Britain, these nocturnal insects (Biston betularia) exhibit remarkable color variation—from pale, speckled forms to almost entirely black ones.

During the Industrial revolution, industrial soot darkened tree bark across industrial regions. The pale moths, once camouflaged against lichen-covered bark, became conspicuous to predators. Black variants, previously rare, thrived in polluted zones through Natural selection. This shift happened within decades—visible proof that evolution could occur within human timescales.

When air quality legislation cleaned British skies in the mid-20th century, pale moths returned to dominance. This dramatic reversal demonstrated that Evolution wasn't one-directional, but responsive to environmental conditions.

The peppered moth became a textbook example of Problem-Solving in nature and an emblem of how Anthropogenic change reshapes Wildlife. Though some details of the original research were later questioned, the phenomenon itself remains genuine and instructive—a visible mirror held up to human Social norms and Ethical living.
