Neural (biology)
Neural refers to anything relating to genes, cells, structures, or processes of the nervous system—the biological networks that sense, process, and respond to information.
The term comes from the Greek neuron (nerve) and appears across multiple scales of biology. At the cellular level, a neuron is the fundamental signaling unit. At the tissue level, neural tissue forms the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. Functionally, "neural" describes mechanisms of sensation, thought, emotion, and behavior—the electrochemical cascades underlying purpose and action.
Neural systems evolved to solve a critical problem: organisms need to integrate signals from their environment, process them, and coordinate responses across their bodies. This required specialized cells capable of rapid, long-distance communication. In vertebrates like humans, the brain serves as the command center, but neural processing happens throughout the body.
Understanding neural biology spans from genetics (which genes build neurons?) to statistical analysis of brain activity. Modern tools like imaging and electrophysiology have revealed stunning complexity: trillions of connections, multiple energy-efficient signaling modes, and remarkable plasticity.
