Limits
A limit is a boundary, constraint, or threshold that defines how far something can go or how much of it can exist. Limits appear across nearly every domain of human knowledge and experience—from the cosmic to the intimate—and understanding them often means understanding the world itself.
In mathematics, a limit describes what a function approaches as its input approaches some value, foundational to Calculus. In Physics, limits reveal fundamental constraints: the Speed of light in relativity, thermodynamic bounds on energy conversion, gravitational thresholds.
Biology is written in limits too—the carrying capacity of ecosystems, the structural load-bearing of bone, the refractory period of neurons in neural signaling. Even code respects limits: arrays have fixed sizes, state machines have defined transitions.
Psychologically, learning accelerates until cognitive saturation. Socially, communities negotiate limits through law, ethics, and social contracts.
The paradox: limits constrain, yet they also define. Without boundaries, a thing has no shape. Understanding limits is understanding possibility itself.
