Ion
An ion is an atom or molecule that has gained or lost one or more electrons, giving it a net electric charge. This fundamental concept bridges Chemistry, physics, and nature itself.
When an atom loses electrons, it becomes positively charged (a cation); when it gains them, it becomes negatively charged (an anion). This process, called ionization, happens through energy input—heat, light, or collision. Ions are everywhere: in seawater, in your body's cells, in the atmosphere, and in space.
The Great Oxidation Event dramatically increased atmospheric ions, reshaping early Earth. Today, ions enable essential processes: nerve signals travel via sodium and potassium ions; marine ecosystems depend on dissolved ionic salts; and neural networks (both biological and digital) use charge gradients to process information.
