Golden ratio

The golden ratio is a mathematical constant, approximately 1.618, that appears surprisingly often in nature, art, and design. Often denoted by the symbol φ (phi), it emerges when a line is divided so that the ratio of the whole to the larger part equals the ratio of the larger part to the smaller part—a proportion that has captivated mathematicians and artists for millennia.

Euclid first described this division formally in his Elements. The ratio satisfies the equation φ² = φ + 1, making it unique among proportions. It appears in the geometry of pentagons, spiral growth patterns in fungi and shells, and even in human anatomy.

In art and painting, the golden ratio has been celebrated as an aesthetically pleasing proportion—though modern research questions how universally humans prefer it. Designers use it in scale and composition, and architects incorporate it into buildings, though its practical necessity remains debated.

The golden ratio connects intimately to the Fibonacci sequence, where consecutive numbers approach the ratio as they grow larger. This link reveals why the proportion appears so frequently in natural growth systems and biological development.
