Computation

Computation is the process of calculating, processing, or transforming information through systematic steps to solve problems or answer questions. It encompasses everything from mental arithmetic to vast iterative procedures running across distributed systems.

At its heart, computation asks: given some starting state and rules, what follows? A student working through Differentiation by hand, a program executing instructions, or neurons firing in concert—all are computation. The field bridges Mathematics, Philosophy, and practical engineering, exploring what can be calculated, how efficiently, and what cannot be computed at all.

Alan Turing and others showed that computation is substrate-independent: the logic that runs on silicon could theoretically run on paper, water wheels, or biology. This insight unified disparate phenomena under one conceptual umbrella. Today computation drives Navigation, powers 3D modeling, and underwrites Scalable Oversight.

The fundamental questions persist: What is computable? What is the cost? How do we verify correctness? As our communities grow more dependent on algorithmic Action, understanding computation—its power and limits—becomes essential Ethics.
