Cause and effect

Cause and effect describes the relationship where one event or condition (the cause) produces or brings about another event or condition (the effect). It is among humanity's most fundamental ways of understanding how the world works—from everyday experience to physics, from psychology to ecosystem dynamics.

The concept underlies reasoning itself. We ask "why?" and trace backwards through causes; we predict forwards through effects. In molecular biology, a mutation might cause a protein to fold differently, effecting a disease. In decision-making, we weigh causes of outcomes to choose wisely.

However, causality is subtler than it appears. Path dependence shows that identical causes can yield different effects depending on history. Quantum mechanics' measurement problem suggests causation may not be fundamental at the deepest level. Markov processes reveal that sometimes only the present state matters for future effects, not the full past.

Causality appears across disciplines: reaction rates in chemistry, resonance in acoustics, temporal logic in philosophy, branching in software. Yet philosophers and scientists continue debating what causation truly is—a real force, a useful mental model, or something else entirely.
