Variable (mathematics)

A variable is a symbol—typically a letter like x, y, or n—that represents an unknown, changeable, or arbitrary quantity in mathematical expressions and equations. Variables are the bridge between abstract reasoning and concrete measurement, allowing us to write general rules that work across countless specific cases.

In an equation like 2x + 3 = 7, the variable x stands for a value we're trying to discover. In a function like f(x) = x², variables become placeholders for inputs and outputs, transforming concrete numbers into abstract relationships. Beyond simple algebra, variables appear everywhere: in geometry describing spatial relationships, in calculus capturing rates of change, in physics formulating Newton's laws, and in data analysis representing measurements.

The power of variables lies in their generality. Instead of solving one problem at a time, mathematicians use variables to solve infinite families of problems at once. A variable can be vectorial, taking multiple components; it can represent unknowns in a system of equations; or it can range freely over a domain.

This simple notational trick—letting a letter stand for a number—has been foundational to mathematics since algebra's development, enabling everything from engineering design to string theory.
