Neurons

Neurons are the fundamental signaling cells of the Brain, Spinal Cord, and Peripheral Nervous System, responsible for transmitting electrical and chemical messages throughout the body. Each neuron consists of a cell body, branching dendrites that receive signals, and an axon that transmits them. When stimulated, neurons fire action potentials—rapid changes in electrical charge that propagate down the axon at speeds up to 120 meters per second.

The magic of neurons lies in their connectivity: they form networks of staggering complexity, with each neuron potentially connecting to thousands of others. These connections enable everything from conscious thought to automatic reflexes. Information crosses the gaps between neurons (the Synapses) via neurotransmitters, chemical messengers that can excite or inhibit the receiving cell.

Different neuron types specialize in different roles—sensory neurons detect stimuli, motor neurons control muscles, and interneurons relay signals within the Central Nervous System. Dysfunction in neurons underlies conditions from depression to Parkinson's disease, making their study central to Neuroscience and modern medicine.

Neurons are ancient in evolutionary terms: simple versions exist in organisms like jellyfish, while the human Cerebral Cortex contains roughly 16 billion of them, each one a micro-genius of electrochemistry.
