Cognitive

Cognitive refers to the mental processes and abilities involved in acquiring, processing, and using Information. The term spans from the subjective experience of thinking to the measurable capacities underlying functioning intelligence, memory, and reasoning.

Cognition encompasses types of mental activity: perception, attention, memory formation, language processing, problem-solving, and decision-making. These processes operate across temporal processes, from rapid pattern recognition to deliberate logical reasoning. Systems theorists study how these components interconnect—how a single thought emerges from billions of neural events.

The cognitive sciences—including Psychology, neuroscience, philosophy of mind, and artificial intelligence—investigate how minds work. They ask: How do we recognize patterns? Why do some memories persist while others fade? Can machines think?

Cognition matters everywhere. UX designers leverage cognitive principles to create intuitive interfaces. Educators shape curricula around how people actually learn. Understanding cognition illuminates both the everyday mystery of consciousness and the frontiers of what minds can become.
